Speaking of the on/offline convergance..

…Microsoft annouced that its adCenter will also cover offline media, in an effort to provide an alternative to Google. In the offline media world, it does appear that Microsoft has some things up on Google - whereas Google’s effort was targeted at print, Microsoft also has in-game advertising firm Massive Inc. to help pave the way offline.

Social Networks Attract Almost 1/2 the Internet

Old news, but still so exciting (and happily going hand-in-hand with the information from Pew from earlier this week) is a report from Neilsen earlier last month that the top 10 Social Networks are attracting nearly half of all the web users (45% to be exact). Interesting to note is that they counted both “traditional” Social Networks (Myspace) but also sites that bridge the gap between User Generated Media and networking, like YouTube and Blogger. I like this approach, as it really demostrates that Social Networks aren’t just being used to network in the traditional sense, but share content as well.

Pew: Almost 50 MM Internet Users Create UGM

The most recent study by Pew Internet & American Life Project, “Home Broadband Adoption 2006,” has some encouraging things to say about the creation of User Generated Media (UGM).  Pegging the number of online users in the US creating UGM at almost 50 Million, the Pew study indicates that it isn’t just the “broadband elite” that are creating content, but a wide variety of users.  Young and old Americans in a variety of income levels have blogged, created websites, contributed to web sites and blogs, or submitted artwork, photos stories or videos.  However the availability of at-home broadband makes users more likely to do so - and my guess is this will increase as some of these activities become even more mainstream.

Beyond iTunes - The Future of Digital Music

Fast Company has a feature with mini-interviews from a variety of different digital music pioneers. Called  “Digital Music: Sounds of the Future,” the feature includes discussions from Van Toffler, MTV Networks Group President (and founder of Urge along with Microsoft), Michael Robertson of MP3tunes (and Oboe) and Jenny Toomy (a DC/indie rock favorite of mine) of the Future of Music Coalition.
