Bluetooth podcasting

Adverblog has a great story about a UK paper (City AM) that is delivering podcasts via Bluetooth. They call the initiative - and I agree - “an explosive mix of technology (bluetooth), media (mobiles + outdoor) and content (podcasts).” This is one of those exciting experiments that I hope really works - because the prospect of being able to mix media in this manner - especially out in the open - is just such an interesting idea and one I plan to follow.

Glide goes mobile

Business2Blog has a first look the new Glide mobile service, an extension of the online service which will allow users to “upload and share all your digital photos, movies, documents, music, and more.  You can also control how you share your digital stuff by choosing whether the recipient can download  the content or just see the stream, and how many times.” They mention one really neat fun fact - that users will be able to access their online digital music, turning their phone into a portable music player.

SMS: The Hottest Acronym?

Forget all the other hot three-letter acronyms, there’s only SMS for the savvy investor. Total SMS revenues in 2005 were about 75 Billion USD which is much more than Hollywood box office, Videogaming, consoles and all software. SMS is a 90% profit business.” What is SMS? Well, your sons and daughters know it as text-messaging or simply “texting.” Via textuality.org, javablogs, OpenGardens.

A little bit of CES goodness

There’s still a couple of hours to go until Bill Gates kicks off his keynote speech for CES, but I’ve already seen two very cool things that I’m planning on keeping my eye on, and one that makes me sad.

Motorola’s ROKR E2 runs off Linux, and supports mp3, Real and WME formats - with no 100 song limit.

iRiver’s G10 WiBro Game Console looks pretty cool. I have always coveted an iRiver, but the WiBro tips my “want” over into “need” territory. Of course, the types of games they’ll have on it will be a further tipping point, but you have to admit it’s very pretty.

The news story broke yesterday that Sony will not be annoucing anything about the PS3 at CES. This makes me sad, because I was looking forward to hearing what Sony has cooked up.

I’ll have more tonight after I check out the keynote speech. In the meantime, someone get me the WiBro pricing, please?

Skype + Video

I’m not a Skype user, thought I know a lot of podcasts I listen to (TWiT and SliceofSciFi, to name two) use it either to record shows when geusts and hosts aren’t in the same area or to get comments from listeners to put on the shows. However, Skype just released version 2.0 - which adds “high-resolution video picture phone features.” I like the idea - especially because back in the ’80s, I thought we’d already have video phones.

However, video calling isn’t what I find the most interesting. Part of the Skype annoucement came with a deal with Six Apart, makers of TypePad - which will allow Web users to instantly call (via Skype) the bloggers who use TypePad with the push of a button. I’m very excited to see if it takes off and users actually call and/or leave messages for bloggers, but I’m even more excited to see how the bloggers utilize these calls. Can you make comments available? Do a podcast of reader comments? Start talking with your readers on a daily basis (and if so, how do you plan to get anything done)? If you’re a blogger, and you’ve got an idea on how to use the calls you get, give me a yell - I’d love to see what your doing.
